The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is set to begin enforcing the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29, 2024. This move, directed by Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, aims to improve the security of lives and property across the nation by modernizing the motor vehicle registration system.
What is the e-CMR?
The e-CMR is an advanced, real-time online database of motor vehicle information. It is designed to support police investigations and operations by providing accurate and up-to-date vehicle data. This system will play a crucial role in combating vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. By transitioning to a digitalized system, the NPF aims to streamline the processes involved in vehicle documentation and verification.
Benefits of the e-CMR
The new system will make services like change of ownership, change of license number, change of engine, and change of chassis/body more efficient. The e-CMR will ensure the validation of vehicle genuineness and ownership, enhancing the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles. This will also help prevent the purchase of stolen vehicles by unsuspecting buyers.
Public Awareness and Compliance
In preparation for the enforcement, the NPF is conducting a comprehensive public awareness campaign to inform vehicle users about the requirements and procedures for the e-CMR. Members of the public are encouraged to obtain their digitalized CMR certificate online at cmris.npf.gov.ng. For further inquiries, the CMR Command Centre at Force Headquarters (FHQ) in Abuja and its annex in Lagos can be contacted via the provided phone numbers, and technical support is available at cmrtech@npfcmr.ng.
Commitment to Public Safety
The Nigeria Police Force is committed to leveraging technology to enhance public safety and national security. The enforcement of the e-CMR is expected to significantly reduce vehicle theft and the sale of stolen vehicles, creating a safer environment for vehicle ownership. The NPF urges all vehicle owners and users to comply with this new system promptly for optimum safety and security.
