Country singer Ingrid Andress has publicly apologized for her off-key rendition of the US national anthem during Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby in Texas on Monday. The performance, which quickly went viral, showed Andress struggling to stay on key while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” a cappella.
Acknowledging her condition, Andress took to social media to explain her state, admitting, “I was drunk last night.” She continued, “I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need. That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition.” In a lighter tone, she added, “I’ll let y’all know how rehab is – I hear it’s super fun.”
The performance was met with harsh criticism online, with many describing it as “painful” and “one of the worst national-anthem renditions ever.” Clips of Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm seemingly smirking during her performance also circulated widely.
Despite the backlash, Andress received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow musicians. Singer and actress Lucy Hale expressed her sympathy, saying, “I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Sending you a lot of my thoughts. Take care of you and you’re going to come out of this so much stronger.” Country star Martina McBride offered encouragement, stating, “Sending lots of love and positivity. You got this.” Singer-songwriter Julia Michaels also showed her support, writing, “Love you, girl. I’m sorry you’re going through this. And I’m sorry the world can be so cruel. Here for you XX.”
Andress, who has previously received four Grammy Award nominations, is now focused on her recovery and has pledged to keep her fans updated on her journey.
