Nigerian music and film industry has lost one of its most cherished icons, Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away at the age of 72. The legendary singer and actress reportedly died on Tuesday night after collapsing at a birthday celebration for Mrs. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, held on Banana Island, Lagos.
Eyewitnesses at the event recounted the sorrowful incident, stating that Onwenu had just finished a performance when she suddenly slumped. Despite being rushed to Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island, she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s, capturing hearts with her debut album, “For the Love of You,” released in 1981. Her discography includes beloved works such as “In The Morning Light” and “Dancing In The Sun,” along with the iconic hit single “One Love.”
Onwenu’s talents extended beyond music; she was also a celebrated actress, known for her roles in significant Nollywood films like “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart.” Her contributions to both industries have earned her numerous awards and recognition as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music and film.
Her influence wasn’t confined to the arts. Onyeka Onwenu also made her mark in politics and public service. In 2013, she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, and in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. Her dedication to societal improvement was recognized with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. Various organizations have also celebrated her as one of the most influential women in Nigeria.
While her family has yet to officially announce her death, the impact of her passing is deeply felt across the nation. Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy is one of artistic brilliance and committed public service, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s cultural and social landscape.
